“Sado Island Gold Mines” to a World Heritage Site

” Sado Island Gold Mines ” boasted one of the world’s largest production, and it once contributed to the finance of the Edo Shogunate and global trade through the Netherlands.
Now in Sado, there survive the remains of mining, ore dressing, smelting and refining, which were related to the production technology of gold and silver. There also survive the magistrate’s office site and mining settlement sites, which were related to the production system. From them we are able to get the whole picture of the mines.Sado is the only place in the world where these ruins remain in good condition, so we believe that it has the significance of being registered as a World Heritage Site.

「佐渡島（さど）の金銀山」を世界遺産に

「佐渡島の金銀山」は、かつて世界最大級の産出量を上げ、江戸幕府の財政やオランダを通じて世界貿易にも貢献しました。現在、佐渡には金銀の生産技術に関わる採掘・選鉱・製錬・精錬の遺跡、生産体制に関わる奉行所跡や鉱山集落跡などが残り、鉱山の全体像を理解することができます。こうした遺跡が良好に残るのは世界的に見ても佐渡だけで、そこに世界遺産登録の意義があると考えています。
